PowerPrep 1

Powerprep #1
690 : Quant 44, verbal 40 ( Is that me ??)
Raw scores (Q 25/37 , V 32/41)

My bad
Boy ! on a saturday morning , the atmosphere is awesome in pune, and inblue's got the write a test.I did plan on rewieng my previous practice test before i wrote the test today, but when the FIFA QC gets interesting, bye bye GMAT. The long and short of it is, its too difficult to maintain never on the 3 hour trial.
Quant.
4 silly mistakes on quant.[Ok ! Ok i know its criminal.]. Was not able to time the quant section well. was going well until 23, then started to feel the pressure of the ticks. On the 25th question, I really found that i was too short of time. A part of me wanted to hurry.
didnt concentrate well on #25, and ended up guessing,a silly error on 26,less time on 27 : All of them incorrect. 30,31 again incorrect and then 33,34 and 36,37 met the same fate.
All in all improper timing increased a lot of pressure in the later part of quant.
Verbal
Started with SC's, did well on them, got 0-3 white washed on a RC in the 20's and a couple of CR's. Again didnt time it well. The clock was on my head by the 30th question.

What to do now ?

  • Cure the 'bunch incorrect' syndrome. on the quant [(25,26,27),(30,31), (33,34), (36,37)] and getting knocked out by an obnoxious RC on Verbal.
  • Time the Quant properly.Keep time for diffucut questions that might pop up on the Later part of Quant. Increase the Speed on quant. All questions count to the the score as much as the first 15-20.
  • If I have guessed on a given question, pay close attention to the 2-3 questions that follow ( double check).

GMAT Vetrans pls pour in your suggestions.

Hahaha... Ya, i can understand the pains of sitting in front of this stupid box on a Saturday morning!!

But you performed great madam!! Verbal 40 is excellent any day!! These are the signs of a very bright score.. Just need a check on timings in Quant...

Take one thing for granted... If a composed, relaxed head is placed on your shoulders while taking your Quant in GMAT, 50 is certain for us engineers.. So, quant 44 isn't a worry at all...

You have done great!!!
Enjoy the weekend!!!

hey righty.thanks ! A deeper analysis tells me that my eternal problems with every category is timing.

pretty decent score...i am sure that you can only do better next time.

I'm no veteran - but the 750 gives me the status where ppl listen :D
i get a chance to give some more gyan - "iday kush hua".

i'm typing this when Harsha Bhogle and crew are doing a tremendous job building up to the Brazil Vs France match. Really - football has taken over my life :)

Okay dear - here we go. first of all - the "criminal" thingy brought on some smiles. i know where it comes from :)
I guess u r freaking out a bit on quant. take it easy. take it cool. a bit of confidence woill do a lot of good. It is a case of silly mistakes and so i'd advice practice, practice, practice. There is no alternative. I'd differ from righty's views about a guaranteed 50 - we, as engineers, are qualified to get 50 yeah. but still we gotta do those 37 Questions in those 75 minutes, or in other words each Q in about 2 minutes. But micromanagement is not what u shud plan to do. so take bigger milestones - 20 mins for every 10 Questions or something like that. But before that - do that with the practice material u have in hand. OG is a great thing to do. Start with the easy questions, time urself and as the level of difficulty increases gradually, u'll get used to GMAT math and ur speed and proficiency will increase as well. So jump head first into practice and keep working on it.

I shud add that ur Verbal score is indeed pretty good. GMAT score card says "scores beyond 44 are rare" - so ur not doing bad at all :) Dont lose ur control on Verbal in ur Quant worries :) Keep in touch with that too.

And reg ur query on not getting bunch of wrong answers - just forget it. Do not over emphasise on ur prev answer. Once u made ur choice - just move on. Do not waste more time on the next Question simply coz u guessed. After u had done enough work - u shud be guessing less and knowing more. Even then, if u have to guess, click the answer and start working on the next Q as u'd normally do. I have seen that the more we look at a question - the more there are chances for us to do mistakes. This applies for the Verbal section especially - and for the Quants section also. Remember that the 5 answer choices are there to mislead us - so once u got the correct answer, click and move on.

Some insight from my GMAT experience

1. It's key to tackle just one question at a time. Don't ruminate whether you might have gone wrong, it is a horrible distraction. Just move on once u've clicked on a choice.

2. GMATPrep is the only indicative software as far as scoring goes. My score in the real GMAT and the GMATPrep i took the day b4 the test were the same. So save GMATPrep for last. You can take it multiple times, so do take it twice in the last 2 days b4 the test.

3. I used to feel like killing myself for my silly mistakes in quant. So i started slowing down during my practice exams, and found most of my silly mistakes disappearing. In the real GMAT,in spite of slowing down, i was able to finish each section with 20 minutes to spare and also cross the 750 barrier. So issues with timing disappear if you take enough tests subjecting yourself to actual test conditions!.

All the best!

m not the gmat guy but i had cat score of 99.85.. anyways, my friend in ISB had a score of 740. he might help u.
